Several factors affect the price of kratom, including the product type, the brand quality, the quantity you purchase, and where you buy it. Having knowledge of these factors will help you score fantastic deals when shopping and avoid getting ripped off.

Let’s begin with an overview of the kratom industry before delving deeper into cost considerations. 

Mitragyna speciosa (kratom) is native to Southeast Asia. And while it has been known about and enjoyed in the region for centuries, kratom has only acquired a global profile in recent decades.

Kratom products first emerged in the U.S. market in the late 1990s to early 2000s. However, it took until the 2010s for the botanical herb to begin soaring in popularity. As more brands got involved, different strains and product types became available, diversifying the U.S. kratom industry.

Gone are the days of kratom only being found in leaf and powder form. Of course, this development has proven brilliant for retailers and consumers alike. But this market expansion does make it harder to determine how much kratom costs! 

I have identified seven factors that influence the price of kratom. Naturally, some have more impact than others. Let’s get into it. 

Kratom prices can vary depending on the strain. High-strength kratom may have a steeper price tag to account for the richer alkaloid concentration. Strain popularity is also a factor. Mass-produced strains might cost less than more obscure offerings.

Kratom vein color can also influence the cost of a product. Yellow and gold vein kratoms are much rarer than red, green, and white vein strains, so may be more expensive. There are theories that yellow and gold vein kratoms are fermented to boost the total alkaloid content.

Some kratom products have higher manufacturing costs than others, hence why they cost more. For example, making liquid kratom shots and edibles is more complex than making kratom powder. The latter simply involves packaging finely-ground powder into a bag.

Inevitably, companies pass those manufacturing costs onto customers - not doing so would be a terrible business strategy!

However, depending on your preferences, paying more could be worthwhile if it gives you a more enjoyable way of taking kratom. Edibles are travel-friendly, discreet, have pre-measured doses, and taste better than raw kratom powder.

But kratom powder is better if you want to brew kratom tea or use the toss-and-wash method. I like that the most affordable kratom product on the market is also the most versatile!

The overall strength and purity of a kratom product can impact its price. You can expect that something with 300mg of mitragynine will cost more than a product with 200mg of mitragynine.

Refer to third-party lab results when comparing kratom product prices based on potency. Cheap, low-strength kratom could be worse value for money than a pricier, high-potency option.

Avoid brands that aren’t third-party tested. Legit companies are honest about the quality of their kratom. If a brand won’t show you data on the alkaloid content of a product, there is probably something they don’t want you to know.

Pure, unadulterated, and contamination-free kratom may cost a few dollars more. Brands selling organic, non-GMO kratom will likely have higher cultivation costs than cowboy companies that use low-grade techniques.

Indeed, suspiciously cheap kratom should set your alarm bells ringing. If a brand sells products at seemingly impossibly low prices, they could be adulterated with synthetic alkaloids or other nasty ingredients.

Everybody loves a bargain, but you are only getting a good deal if the kratom is legit! 

Hundreds of brands operate in the U.S. kratom industry, but only a fraction of those are worth your money. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) does not regulate kratom products, so establishing a good brand reputation is tricky.

However, in a few states, including Utah, kratom products are regulated by the Kratom Consumer Protection Act (KCPA).

As a buyer, you have a choice to make. Take a chance on an unproven manufacturer, or spend your money on a third-party tested vendor certified as GMP-qualified by the American Kratom Association (AKA).

Your wallet and well-being are better off with transparent, independently approved kratom brands. And while you should not tolerate getting ripped off, it is worth spending a bit more on brands with the backing of advocacy groups and the wider kratom community.

Quality, food-grade packaging also comes at a cost. But it is a necessary one. Inferior packaging can lead to alkaloid degradation, reducing the effectiveness of your kratom product. Top-shelf brands use airtight, resealable packaging and provide protection from sunlight.

The more kratom you buy, the less you pay per gram. For example, 100 grams of kratom powder might cost between $15 and $20. But you can typically buy 1000 grams of the same powder for between $70 to $80.

While the total cost is around four times higher, you get 10 times as much kratom! For regular users, buying in bulk is the only logical option for your wallet. I only suggest purchasing smaller amounts if you use kratom less frequently or are experimenting with new strains.

The same price advantages apply when buying other kratom products in bulk, whether it be kratom capsules, liquid shots, high-potency extracts, or delectable edibles.

Note: Make sure you know how to store kratom if buying large quantities of powder. Although powder can stay fresh and potent for months, bad storage can ruin your product in days or weeks. This would make your kratom usage unnecessarily expensive. 

As in all industries, the market demand and availability of a kratom product can also affect its price. Highly sought-after or rare forms of kratom will cost more than more common but less popular products. That is just market forces at work!

From a vendor’s perspective, if you have a limited amount of an in-demand product, it makes perfect business sense to charge as much as possible.

But make sure you aren’t being scammed. If a company sells strains you have never heard of and cannot find anywhere else, this could be cause for concern. Some bad-faith stores have no qualms about taking advantage of a customer’s instinctive trust or lack of knowledge.  

The cost of kratom varies depending on where you buy it. I am talking about the type of store you get kratom from and whether you purchase it online or at a brick-and-mortar shop.

Perhaps surprisingly, kratom sometimes costs less from a specialist retailer than at gas stations and convenience stores. No joke, I have seen products sold in gas stations for five times more than they should be.

I think these stores know that serious kratom users buy elsewhere, so they primarily target low-information shoppers instead.

Buying kratom online costs much less than purchasing from a physical store. It has nothing to do with product quality but the substantially different running costs these businesses face.

Online kratom stores require a small team of staff, a website, and a warehouse - and dropshipping companies don’t even need the warehouse! In contrast, brick-and-mortar stores need more employees, they have to rent a shop space, pay more energy bills, and so on.

Ultimately, these costs add up and must be transferred to customers for physical kratom stores to make their businesses profitable. Combine that with the more convenient and time-efficient nature of online shopping, and it is no wonder that web-based vendors have more success.

As discussed, kratom costs vary due to multiple factors. But I want to give you some ballpark prices for a few types of premium-grade kratom products. You may find cheaper deals or end up paying a bit more, but this should stop you from getting ripped off.

• Kratom Powder: less than $20 for 100 grams. Around $70 to $80 for 1000 grams (1kg).
• Kratom Capsules: Less than $20 for 100 capsules. Less than $150 for 1000 capsules.
• Kratom Tinctures: Around 30 to $40 for every 150mg of mitragynine.
• Kratom Shots: $15 to $20 per kratom shot product. Expect a price reduction if buying in bulk.
• Kratom Edibles: Depends on the potency. Anything around $25 for every 100mg of mitragynine is good value for money.
• Kratom Powder Extracts: Depends on the concentration of the extract. The brand should state how much stronger the powder extract is than standard powder. Calculate accordingly.
• Kratom Extract Capsules: Also dependent on the concentration of the extract. Refer to the extract strength and make a calculation compared to the cost of regular kratom capsules. 

The bottom line: the cost of kratom depends on several factors, including brand quality, product type, and the amount purchased.

I recommend kratom powder for the most affordable experience. However, you may want to consider other options if you have specific preferences and more money to spend.
