You may have tried kratom, but have you tried kratom extracts? This relatively new form of using kratom has taken things to a whole new level, as you’ll shortly see why.
Kratom Extracts Review
- Stronger potency than the regular kratom
What Are Kratom Extracts?
When a type of plant material, such as kratom powder or leaves, goes through a process involving the removal of its constituents, it’s said to be an extract. With regard to kratom, the goal is to extract the alkaloids, Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine contained in the leaves. These two alkaloids bind to the same receptors in our brain as opioid drugs, thus resulting in very similar outcomes. A higher concentration of alkaloids translates to more potency. The process of extracting compounds does not only pertain to kratom. In fact, it’s been used around the world for various herbs and plants for thousands of years. There are many methods of extraction. However, not all methods are created equal, as some may result in higher alkaloid concentrations than others. Additionally, some methods will extract only the desired constituent, also known as “isolates,” while others will extract all the compounds in the plant material, known as “full-spectrum.” The most basic extract methods include the following.
According to Thomas Easly and Steven Horne in their book, “The Modern Herbal Dispensatory,” water-based extracts are the oldest and most basic of all methods. Water is used as the solvent which extracts the desired compounds in an herb. Water-based extracts come in many forms, such as: Infusions: Can be hot or cold. Kratom teas are a great example. Decoction: Similar to a hot infusion, but the plant is simmered in hot water. Used for tough plant material, such as bark or roots. Syrups: A water-extract that has been preserved with a sweetener.
Alcohol Extractions (Tinctures)
Alcohol extractions have also been used for thousands of years, dating as far back as 7000 BCE in ancient China. The purpose of using alcohol rather than water is to obtain a longer shelf life, as water is not as effective at preserving plant constituents. Distillation: The process of separated constituents via boiling and condensation. Macerations: The most common method for making tinctures, which involves the process of soaking dry plant material in alcohol for at least 14 days. (It’s that easy to make your own tinctures)
Have you ever used a coffee machine that pases hot water through a pod of ground coffee? If so, the process is called percolation. Alcohol can also be used for percolation.
Advanced Extraction Methods
More advanced methods of extraction such as the ones below, require the use of special technology:
- Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE)
- Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAI)
- Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME)
Due to the additional processes required to make extracts, the price per product must inevitably increase. On a positive note, because extracts are more potent, less is needed to achieve the same results. To keep in mind, all forms of kratom pose a risk for side effects, both long term and short term.
How to Store Kratom Extracts
Storing kratom extracts is very similar to storing kratom in any form. Kratom extracts have three mortal enemies.
Each enemy works to destroy the alkaloids in kratomHence, less alkaloids means weaker potency. Therefore, you’ll want to be very careful of where you store your kratom extracts. For example, you should refrain from storing kratom in or near:
- Window sills
Ideal locations for storage include:
- Cabinets not adjacent devices which emit heat or humidity
Most vendors, including ourselves, package kratom products in solid colored bags or bottles to protect the alkaloids from the sun’s UV rays. However, some of our customers like to transfer kratom into glass jars, which is perfectly acceptable, assuming the jar isn’t exposed to sunlight for extended periods. If you follow the guidelines for storing kratom outlined in this section, you can expect a shelf life of at least one year with barely any loss in potency.
Different Types of Kratom Extracts
Kratom extracts come in various forms. However, the potency is going to depend on various factors, such as how many alkaloids were extracted during the extraction process, and how potent the plant was to begin with. Therefore, a tincture can be stronger than extract powder or vice versa.
Liquid Kratom Extracts
Liquid extracts are products which have been left in liquid form such as tinctures, teas, and shots. Tinctures come in a glass bottle with a built-in dripper to facilitate dispensing the liquid. A shot also comes in a small bottle sometimes made of glass, but unlike the tincture, the entire liquid in the shot is usually used at once. The most common form of extract is the popular kratom tea.
Kratom Extract Capsules
Some kratom extract capsules are found in the form of tablets. Tablets are similar to capsules, but instead of encapsulating the powder, the extract itself is made into solid form. Other forms of extract capsules consist of extract powder that has been encapsulated with a pharma-grade vegan capsule, similar to regular kratom capsules. Since extract capsules are more potent than regular capsules, they’re sometimes sold in much smaller quantities, as little as two, and cost much more than normal kratom capsules. Those who are new to kratom should be very careful with how many extract capsules they use.
Kratom Extract Powder
Kratom extract powder is different from regular kratom powder in its texture, taste, and potency. The only similarity is how fast it kicks in. Extract powder tends to feel more like hard crystals, such as salt, but slightly larger, and its effects can be overwhelming, especially for beginners, so tread lightly. With regard to taste, it's equally bitter to regular powder, but with a different taste nonetheless.
How Long Do Kratom Extracts Take to Kick in?
The time it takes to feel the initial experience is going to depend on how you used the extract in the first place, as some forms work faster than others. Extracts in the form of tinctures, shots, powder, and tea will kick in rather quickly, sometimes as fast as 5-10 minutes. Meanwhile, extracts in the form of tablets or capsules can take anywhere from 30-45 minutes. Something to keep in mind is the amount of food in your system when using kratom. The more food in your system, the longer it will take to feel the experience, and the weaker the experience will be.
Look For This When You’re Ready to Buy Kratom Extract
There are a few things you should look for if you wish to get the best bang for your buck while protecting your health. Some kratom farmers may use harmful substances when cultivating the tree. Sometimes vendors stretch the truth regarding their claims. Fortunately, there is a way to protect yourself from such risks. I will show you exactly how, but first, if time is of the essence, head over to the kratom extract products here on Kratom Monkey, as we meet all of the following criteria.
Are Kratom Extracts Legal?
Yes, kratom extracts are legal in the United States. Therefore, we are not able to legally ship kratom extracts (or any form of kratom) to you if you happen to reside in any of the following six states:
- Rhode Island
Always make sure the kratom you’re about to purchase is free from the following substances:
- Heavy metals
- Harmful bacteria like Salmonella or e-coli
The aforementioned substances are unlikely to cause serious short term damage to the average person. However, if exposed for extended periods, the consequences can be detrimental. Therefore, know what’s in a vendor’s kratom before you buy it.
If a vendor has real confidence in their extract products, they will provide a satisfaction guarantee. Here at Kratom Monkey, we offer a 45-day money-back guarantee if you’re not fully satisfied with your product. Simply send us an email, give us a call, or chat with us via our site chat and we’ll be happy to help.
Third Party Lab Results
No vendor can claim one hundred percent transparency without offering third party lab results to their customers. Lab results are intended for two purposes. First, they state the concentration of alkaloids in the kratom, and secondly, they verify that the product is free from the harmful substances mentioned above. Without knowing what the concentration of alkaloids in a kratom product is, customers cannot compare the potency between various vendors, and are also vulnerable to outlandish and exaggerated vendor claims.
