Is Kratom Legal in Mexico in 2023? Find Out
Kratom is perfectly legal in the country of Mexico. Whether it is exported into the country via an airline or through the border in a vehicle, traveling to Mexico with kratom will not pose a legal risk.
As a descendent of Mexicans (my last name is Rivera), I have personally traveled to Mexico from the airport in Tijuana, MX with 100 grams of kratom powder, and didn't experience any legal trouble whatsoever. Allow me to explain in more detail.
Is Kratom Legal in Mexico?
If Mitragyna speciosa is legal in the United States, it is because, technically speaking, no law makes it illegal. However, this means that it is not regulated in terms of quality and accessibility, except in a few states such as Utah and Georgia.
Fortunately, the same applies in Mexico. Since no Mexican federal laws have banned kratom, the possession, distribution, and use of the plant can be carried out without fear of legal persecution.
This applies anywhere, so you do not have to worry if you want to move around the country with the plant.
In my opinion, Mexico has much bigger problems to worry about with the war on the cartels.
Nevertheless, if you are planning on traveling with kratom, then you should take some time to research the country's legislation, as policies are constantly changing, and the last you thing you want is to end up in a prison abroad.
That being said, I live in Huntington Beach, CA, and traveled to the Mexican state of Zacatecas in June 2022 to visit my grandma because she was on her deathbed.
I took roughly 100 grams of Green Maeng Da kratom powder with me as I drove to the Mexican airport in Tijuana, which meant I had to cross the border while inside the airport.
I put the 100 grams of powder inside of my luggage, not the carrier bag, and experienced zero problems. Now, I didn't bring the kratom back with me to the US, but if kratom is legal in your state, you should not experience any problems bringing it back to the states.
If you're traveling to Mexico, whether you're taking a flight or driving there, rest assure you will not have any legal problems.
Is Kratom Going to Stay Legal in Mexico
Since Mexico has much bigger problems to worry about regarding the cartels and substances such as cocaine and fentanyl, the focus on kratom has fallen into the backseat.
However, demand for kratom from the Mexican people is growing, and that can only mean good things regarding legislation.
We're actually already seeing a rise in Mexican kratom vendors, and hope it continues to grow.
Additionally, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recently declared kratom to be safe, which should help destigmatize kratom in Mexico.
However, at the end of the day, the future is not set in stone, and you should always do your homework before taking kratom to any country in order to avoid legal repurcussions.
Prisons in third world countries are one of the last places in the world you want to end up in.
Where to Buy Kratom Products in Mexico?
With the affirmative response to “Is kratom legal in Mexico?" your next question might be where in Mexico can you buy kratom.
You have to remember that Mexican commerce has not evolved at the same rate as the US. Therefore, although buying kratom online is possible in Mexico, it may be a bit of a challenge.
Your best bet is going to either purchase kratom online while you're still in the US or to buy from a brick and mortar store when in Mexico.
Just like in the US, the more likely places for buying kratom in person while in Mexico is going to include:
- Gas stations
- Smoke & Vape shops
- Pharmacies
- Botanical shops
If possible, try to buy kratom from a botanical shop or any niche store that sells herbs as this increases your chances of buying the highest quality possible.
However, keep in mind that kratom is not as readily available there as it is in the US. From my experience in Mexico, no one even knows what kratom is.
Hence, as I previously mentioned, your best bet is to buy kratom while you're still in the US.
A Word of Caution Regarding Mexican Cartels
Therefore, if you are thinking about driving to Mexico with a truckload of kratom kilo bags (especially with the intention to sell), think again.
The cartels do not take kindly on people who compete with their "products," and kratom is known to be an opioid-like substance, making it easy to mistake as a direct replacement.
I know what I'm saying is a long shot, but I want to put it out there because I knew people who were murdered by the cartel, and the last thing I want is more people running into trouble with those crazy psychopaths, especially because of kratom.
Traveling Back to The US From Mexico With Kratom
However, and this is super important, you must ensure you are not traveling back to the following six states, as kratom has been banned there, and you can get in big legal trouble.
The six states include:
