When a type of plant material, such as kratom powder or leaves, goes through a process involving the removal of its constituents, it’s said to be an extract. Decoction: Similar to a hot infusion, but the plant is simmered in hot water. Used for tough plant material, such as bark or roots. Syrups: A water-extract that has been preserved with a sweetener.
Alcohol extractions have also been used for thousands of years, dating as far back as 7000 BCE in ancient China. The purpose of using alcohol rather than water is to obtain a longer shelf life, as water is not as effective at preserving plant constituents. Distillation: The process of separated constituents via boiling and condensation.
