Mixing Magnesium and Kratom: Is it Safe?

Many people are concerned about mixing kratom with certain compounds, and rightfully so, as mixing two reactive substances can have negative consequences. However, mixing magnesium and kratom can actually have positive results.

The two work synergistically to enhance kratom’s overall experience, which I'll be happy to elaborate on in this post.

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. The information in our articles are represented solely as the opinions of the respective authors, who do not claim to be medical professionals. We are not medical experts, just kratom enthusiasts.

What is Kratom?

Kratom is an evergreen tree from the tropical regions of Southeast Asia, where the natives have been chewing on the leaves for hundreds if not thousands of years.

The tree comes in four different colors, including:

  • Red strains
  • White strains
  • Green strains
  • yellow/gold strains

Each color offers a unique set of uses. Strains of the same color have more uses in common than strains with the same name.

For example, Red Bali and Red Borneo have more uses in common than Red Bali and White Bali.

The leaves contain two alkaloids, Mitragynine and 7-Hydroxymitragynine, which bind to the same receptors in our blood as opioid drugs, thus producing similar outcomes.
The higher the concentration of alkaloids per leaf, the more potent the strain.

Kratom can be used in many forms, including:

  • Capsules
  • Gummies
  • Shots
  • Tinctures
  • Tea
  • Extract tablets and powder
  • Toss N’ Wash (powder)

Each way of using kratom has its own perks. For example, capsules take longer to kick in than powder or tea, but they help bypass kratom’s bitter flavor.

To learn how long it takes to feel the initial effects for each use of kratom, check out this post I wrote titled, “How Long Does Kratom Take to Kick in?” Ultimately, it comes down to preference.

Kratom Effects

Kratom offers many amazing uses, which is why it’s become so popular around the world. As I previously mentioned, each color strain is used for a unique combination of uses. Check out the table below to get an idea of what I’m talking about.

(2 check marks means it’s especially useful for that effect).

Allow me to explain in a bit more detail what you can expect regarding kratom uses.

Energy

Many people have replaced their traditional cup of joe in the morning with a warm kratom tea.

However, unlike caffeinated beverages which produce a rapid boost in energy followed by a hard crash and sometimes jitteriness, kratom tea’s energy boost is much more gradual, well balanced, and less likely to produce unwanted side effects.

The energy boost is especially useful for getting through and strenuous tasks which require physical labor. Expect 3-5 hours of increased energy.

White Maeng Da is without a doubt, the king of energizing strains.

Tension Relief AKA Stress

Kratom is extremely effective at completely eradicating tension, both physical and mental, by distancing you from your negative thoughts. The headaches will slowly begin to fade away as the physical tension in your muscles eases up.

Expect 3-5 hours of tension relief. Red Bali is a great strain for relieving tension at night before going to bed as it’s also very sedative. However, for daytime use I recommend Green Maeng Da or Green Malay.

Discomfort Relief

Depending on the severity, kratom has the ability to either reduce or completely eradicate physical discomforts, such as body aches or soreness. Bothersome sensations are probably the number one reason, along with tension relief, for using kratom. Expect 3-5 hours of discomfort relief.

I’ve found Red Bali to be the most popular strain for relieving discomfort during the evening and night. However, for daytime use, I recommend Green Maeng Da or Green Malay.

Mood Boost

Kratom’s mood boost is truly amazing. If tension relief is the removal of unwanted emotions, then the mood boost is the replacement of unwanted emotions with positive ones. I can best describe it as a surge of optimism and hope, which usually translates to motivation and productivity.

The climax of the euphoria only lasts about 30 minutes, but the entirety of the mood boost can extend for another 3 hours.

Green Maeng Da is my favorite strain for boosting my mood. It’s especially helpful for stress. Certain strains will be more potent than others.

Appetite Suppression

Many people are still unaware of kratom’s ability to suppress their appetite, a more than useful property in a world where we’re constantly surrounded by fast food and junk food.

I’ve found strains which are more energizing and mood boosting to be the best at suppressing food cravings, such as Green Maeng Da and Green Malay. Expect 3-5 hours of appetite suppression when using those strains.

Sedation

Last but not least, kratom can help you both fall and remain asleep. Red Bali is the undisputed champion of all the sedation strains. From my personal experience, I’ve woken feeling the sedation effects after a deep 7 hour slumber.

Red Bali is no joke. Expect to feel very sleepy within an hour or so, followed by a full night's rest. Therefore, never drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery after using Red Bali.

Side Effects

For example, Green Maeng Da and Green Malay are considered stronger strains than Green Elephant or Green Kali, even though they all offer the same uses.

There are certain substances which you can mix along with kratom to potentiate the effects, such as magnesium, but first let's dive into what magnesium is and how it can benefit you.

Although kratom has a myriad of amazing uses, taking too much can lead to unwanted side effects, especially for those who are new to kratom (due to their low tolerance).

Using too much kratom can trigger side effects like:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation

These negative side effects are not lethal, but nevertheless they are extremely unpleasant. Fortunately, they should subside on their own within an hour or two.

What is Magnesium?

Magnesium is a mineral that our bodies require in order to perform certain physiological functions. It’s known as a crucial component in the more than 300 enzymes found in your body.

According to EatRight.org, magnesium is considered a major mineral, meaning we require more of it compared to trace minerals like zinc or iron.

Magnesium is responsible for a wide variety of physiological functions including:

  • Supporting muscle functions
  • Nerve function
  • Energy production
  • Maintaining healthy bones
  • Maintaining a healthy heart
  • Anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Better sleep
  • Reduce depression
  • Improves exercise performance
  • Improves blood sugar levels

More specifically, it’s used to treat:

  • Constipation
  • Cramps
  • Asthma
  • Migraine
  • Eclampsia
  • Arrhythmia
  • Dysmenorrhea
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Dyspepsia

You can obtain magnesium from supplements or, even better, natural foods such as:

  • Yogurt
  • Leafy vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Beans
  • Milk
  • Nuts
  • Seeds

While over consuming magnesium from food sources is not a concern, the same cannot be said when taking magnesium via supplements.

Over consuming magnesium can lead to adverse reactions like:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal cramping

As you can see, many of magnesium’s side effects are similar to those produced by kratom. Hence, it’s extremely important to know what you’re doing should you decide to mix the two.

Now let’s look at the opposite spectrum of magnesium intake. Low levels of magnesium are rarely the cause of medical conditions.

However, severe magnesium deficiency can put people at risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis.

Can You Mix Magnesium & Kratom?

The short answer is yes, you can mix magnesium and kratom, which will result in more potent kratom experiences.

If you’re not already using kratom, you’ll quickly realize how easy it is to build a kratom tolerance, especially if you’re using it on a daily basis.

Therefore, seeking certain substances which can potentiate kratom can be extremely useful, such as:

  • Citric acid
  • Magnesium
  • Black pepper
  • Turmeric
  • Caffeine

By the way, if you’re curious about how turmeric can also help you obtain better and more powerful kratom effects, check out this post I wrote called, “Turmeric & Kratom: Can You Mix The Two?”

However, you don’t always have to use potentiators to continue experiencing potent kratom effects. There are simpler ways, like taking a tolerance break, which means not using kratom for at least 2 weeks to a month.

Sometimes, people experience high tolerance to only one specific strain. This phenomenon is known as “Stagnant Strain.”

If you happen to become tolerant to one strain, you have two options. You can either take a tolerance break as mentioned above, or you can simply switch to a similar strain.

For example, if you’re using Red Bali often and notice you require larger serving sizes to obtain the same results as before, you can switch to Red Borneo. You don’t have to stick to the same color though, as that is only a suggestion. If you don't wish to take a tolerance break, you can mix magnesium and kratom to potentiate kratom’s effects.

However, in order for magnesium and kratom to work together, you must use magnesium everyday as part of your daily supplement routine. As always, consult with your doctor to learn how much to use.

This person on Reddit claims Magnesium Glycinate and Magnesium L-Threonate to be the best types for mixing with kratom. Additionally, they claim that Glycinate mixes better with sedating strains while Threonate is better for energizing strains.
